The Mombeltramo Roero Riserva comes from a single vineyard of the same name, known for producing particularly austere wines that soften over time, representing exceptional aging potential. This wine offers a captivating intertwining of aromas, flavors and textures, ranging from sweet red fruit and dried rose to tobacco, game, menthol and liquorice. Powerful and persistent tannins support a precise structure that suggests a long, intriguing evolution.
The 2016 Roero Riserva Vigna Mombeltramo is a heady, explosive wine. Black cherry, menthol, sage, lavender and spice all infuse the palate with tremendous depth. The 2016 is deep, vibrant and full of energy, with a real sense of gravitas that adds so much character. I loved it.
Brilliant bright garnet red with a brightening edge. On the nose there is a pronounced scent of mint and mustard seeds, also slightly floral of violets and fresh wild berries. A classic Nebbiolo from Roero, the single wineyard Mombeltramo reveals intriguing scents of rose petals and tobacco. It offers a silky, medium weight palate of dried red berries with herbal and dark loam notes. Finishes very long with round, firm tannins. Matured in French oak for 24 months. The soil of the 1.5 ha Mombeltramo vineyard is more calcareous than the Trinita vineyard and it's exposition is more easterly. The wines from this vineyard are particularly austere in their first years of life and become softer over time.
The Malvirà 2015 Roero Riserva Mombeltramo offers candied fruit and even a touch of cherry cough drop with aniseed and licorice. Those spicy licorice tones are present throughout these red wines from Malvirà, and they pop up in a few of the estate's white wines as well. The tannins are silky and integrated, yet that nervous rambunctious quality you get with Nebbiolo is ever present.
The 2014 Roero Riserva Mombeltramo is laced with pretty floral and savory notes that give the wine its perfumed, aromatic upper register. Wild cherry, tobacco, cedar and dried rose petal all develop in the glass in this nuanced mid-weight Roero. The 2014 is quite attractive especially within the context of the year.
The 2013 Roero Riserva Mombeltramo shows terrific freshness to match its lithe, mid-weight personality. Crushed rose petal, sweet red berries cinnamon and mint are nicely delineated in a Roero that speaks to elegance above all else. What a pretty and gracious wine it is.
The 2010 Roero Riserva Mombeltramo offers an intriguing interplay of aromas, flavors and textures. Sweet red cherries, tobacco, game, menthol and licorice open up in the glass, all supported by beams of precise tannins. The wine's mid-weight structure suggests it will mature a bit earlier than the other 2010s in the range. Still, there is a lot to like.
The 2009 Roero Riserva Mombeltramo gives us a nice look back in time. This late-release wine is fine and silky, with extremely polished or almost glossy aromas of fine fruit, tarry smoke, natural rubber and licorice. The wine is laser focused in its intensity and its lasting freshness. With those Nebbiolo tannins, this wine should hold steady on an even longer aging trajectory.
